Ecology is no longer just a novelty, but very much an essential part of the way we live today if we wish to ensure a healthy future for our children, and it is for this reason that the Royal Plaza Montreux makes every effort at sustaining development. The Royal Plaza Montreux receives from the Swiss Private Sector Agency, his 1st certificate for its engagement in the protection of the climate. It is with pleasure that I inform you hereunder of just some of our efforts as well as the results obtained. We will be keeping this page updated on a regular basis to keep you informed. The challenge is huge but rest assured that we will do all in our power to develop new ideas with the aim to consuming less energy.
Bio Cotton
We ask our guests to leave bath towels hanging up if they do not wish to have them changed. We placed a notice to this effect in each of the each of the bathrooms about three years ago, and even if in the first two years this was not very effective, we have noticed a change over the past year. With an 8% decrease in the amount of towels utilised, we can see a marked increase in the public's sensibility towards ecology and sustainable development.
Tap water
Over half of the world's population does not have access to drinking water. This is perhaps the greatest problem of today's planet. Our hotels has an average consumption of 4,85 million liters per month. In March 2007 we installed filters on all of the hotels taps which has allowed us to decrease our water consumption by 12,9% although we have an increase of 11,4% in our room occupancy.
Co2 Reduction
Lighting is a major expense for the hotel. The majority of lighting equipment runs on 220V but could function just as effectively using a couple of volts/watts less. In 2006 we installed a sophisticated device which uses the exact amount of energy required for each light bulb/device. This huge investment has allowed us to economize several thousand Kwtts each month, and has generated a decrease in our energy consumption of 22,3% since 2006. To obtain this result we also installed energy saving bulbs in different parts of the hotel as well as installing sensory devices in the hotel's car park which has allowed savings of 42% electricity in this area.
Our staff has been trained to become aware of the environment. We require them to separate paper form other waste material, to only print a minimum number of emails and to consider packaging when making purchases. Through the "on-the-job" sensibilisation of our kitchen staff, we have seen our gas consumption decrease by 8% since 2006.
